Vowel umlauts are a type of sound change in which a vowel in a word is pronounced more towards the front of the mouth due to the influence of a front vowel in a following syllable. This change is often marked by the use of an umlaut diacritic (¨) in the written form of the word. Diphthongs, on the other hand, are complex vowel sounds that consist of a combination of two different vowel sounds within the same syllable. In diphthongs, the tongue glides from one vowel sound to another, creating a single, unique sound. **

In Latin hexameter, diphthongs are scanned as long vowels. This means that diphthongs such as "ae" and "oe" are treated as a single long syllable. When scanning a line of Latin hexameter, it is important to recognize diphthongs and count them as one long syllable to maintain the correct meter of the verse. This helps to ensure that the rhythm and flow of the poem are maintained according to the rules of Latin prosody. **

In Korean, diphthongs or double vowels are used to represent a single sound that is a combination of two vowel sounds. They are used when the pronunciation of a word requires the blending of two vowel sounds into one. For example, the diphthong "ㅐ" is used to represent the sound "ae" as in the word "해 (hae)" meaning "sea". Double vowels are also used to indicate long vowel sounds, such as "ㅓ" in "서 (seo)" meaning "to serve". Overall, diphthongs and double vowels are used to accurately represent the pronunciation of words in Korean. **

Yes, diphthongs are also counted beyond the word in Latin meter. In Latin poetry, diphthongs are considered as a single vowel sound and are counted as one syllable, regardless of whether they are within a single word or span across two words. This is important for maintaining the metrical structure and rhythm of the poetry. Therefore, diphthongs are consistently counted as one unit in Latin meter, regardless of their position within a word or across multiple words. **
